Top 5 Places To Visit For New Travelers
195 countries. There are 195 countries in the world. You decide that you want to travel the world, but where to begin? Do you want to start in Europe? Would you start with Western Germany or explore Eastern Russia? The possibilities can be overwhelming.
Deciding the first stop on the journey of world traveling is difficult, but these are my top five places to visit if you want to start. Each of these places offers a balance of historical landmarks, great food, affordable housing, ease of transportation, and friendly people. Granted, these places have their flaws, but I believe these can kickstart your own book of travels.
Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok has everything to offer, from inexpensive, but incredible cuisine to majestic palaces to mega shopping experiences. I come from a family of “foodies” and we learned that no matter where it is served, from a street vendor, local restaurant, or fine dining restaurant, Thai food is equally delicious. An unforgettable dining experience that Bangkok offers is eating at one of the four floating markets. You buy and eat fresh food as your boat goes through the market, while looking through unique souvenirs that the locals are selling. Fair warning that after eating food here, no Thai food in the west will ever compare.
The city provides a ethnic experience through the impressive temples that require certain attire to enter, such as the Grand Palace or Temple of The Reclining Buddha. Shopping in Bangkok is another story. With the Chatuchak Market and its over 8,000 stalls, it is almost impossible to leave empty handed. Transportation is very inexpensive for taxi cabs, motorbike taxis, subways, and even tuk-tuks. Bangkok is the perfect blend between tradition and modern through its thriving city life and extravagant establishments.
Rome, Italy
Rome is a city full of history. It seems as if every corner you turn, there will be an ancient ruin that holds centuries of history. A person can visit the Pantheon, the largest unsupported dome in the world, then walk about a mile to reach the Colosseum, the world’s largest amphitheater. Within Rome, there is the Vatican City, which is the center of the Roman Catholic Church, and home to the famous Sistine Chapel. Rome’s historical monuments are enough reason to visit when you begin traveling.
The food tends to be on the expensive side, but the carbonara pasta is as fresh as can be and it is an experience to eat gelato while admiring the Trevi Fountain. Tourists can easily navigate the train system, haul a cab, or simply choose to walk around the city. The places to stay range from 100 to 300 euros or $120 to $350, depending on the number of people and how close it is to the main tourist sites. Rome has the ability to transport you to the past through its cobblestone grounds and thousands of years old temples.
Dominical, Costa Rica
A truly hidden treasure. Although this small beach town on the coast is known for its waves, it also offers experiences that are perfect for those who want to immerse themselves with the environment. There are hiking routes or horseback riding tours that lead to the incredible Nauyaca waterfalls, which is a sight to see. The Hacienda Baru offers a zip-line canopy tour through the forest and exposes you to the plants and animals within one of the luscious rainforests of Costa Rica. Just don’t forget to bring bug spray!
When my family and I visited, we stayed in a private villa and although it is a bit expensive, I would 100% recommend it. We were able to wake up to the sounds of toucan and monkey chatter around our place with the view of the Playa Ballena. There is a larger amount of vacation rentals than hotels on this quaint, little town, but restaurant choices were limited so we turned to cooking often. Although it is not as well known yet, Dominical used its surrounding to create activities for everyone to enjoy.
Paris, France
Also known as the “City of Love”. Not only is Paris a popular honeymoon destination, it is a center of fashion, art, architecture, and is deep rooted with history. There are about 130 museums that have centuries worth of art and you don’t have to be a art fanatic to know how to appreciate it. The Musee de Louvre is the world’s most visited museum and is the home of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, along with pieces from the prominent art eras.
In addition to being a pillar in the art world, Paris is filled with architectural feats that are truly jaw dropping, including Notre Dame, Sacre-Coeur, and Arc de Triomphe. I remember seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time and how I was in awe of its complex lattice structure and how it glowed to match the stars at night. The French cuisine is complicated, but elegant and the pastries are incomparable. From food trucks parked at the Eiffel Tower to restaurants on the Champs Elysees, the dining options are endless. There is no doubt you will fall in love with the city of Paris.
Bali, Indonesia
Bali is a geographic dream with the friendliest of people. The beauty of Bali is shown through its natural attractions, from beaches to mountains to waterfalls. The iconic rice paddies in Tegallalang are amidst a lush rainforest and glistens in the light during harvest time. The Balinese people are as full and beautiful as the scenery that they live in. They are known for their warm hospitality, sense of humor and how they radiate love to everyone. The connections you make with the locals are unforgettable and you’re reminded of how strong kindness can be.
These temples have become part of Bali’s scenery, surrounded by the mountains, overlooking the sea, and providing its people with a peaceful and serene comfort. I can picture myself now at Uluwatu Temple, watching the Balinese silhouettes dancing the Kecak with the sun setting in the background, listening to the waves crash on the shore, and the warm wind blowing in my face. Bali provides a perfect getaway where time slows down and you can appreciate the natural wonders of the world.
In conclusion, these five locations are great fits to start your world travelling experience. They all are different in their own ways and there will be a place that fits your likings.
